After using it we found that Coarse sand or grit serves as a critical component by enhancing the soil's drainage capacity. It prevents water retention around the roots, which can lead to root rot. This component is like the foundation of a house, ensuring stability and proper drainage.

Organic Matter

Organic matter provides essential nutrients (succulent fertilization) to plants. We saw that it is like a steady food supply, ensuring the cacti have the necessary nourishment to grow and thrive. But you also need to take care of the aeration in the soil.

Perlite but also pumice act as aerators and moisture regulators. They create air pockets within the soil, promoting healthy root growth and preventing compaction. They're akin to the shock absorbers in a car, providing a buffer and balance.

Parallel to filling raised garden beds, it is important to keep the right proportions and quantities of the soil components that's why we would recommend these quantities:

Proportions and Mixing

  • about 33% coarse sand

  • about 33% perlite or pumice

  • about 33% organic matter

But keep in mind that there are also other great soil mix varieties, not only succulent soil but also soil mix for herbs, some other components are Pine Bark Fines or Activated Charcoal.

Succulent cactus plants can store water and are akin to nature's little reservoirs. This distinctive feature demands a soil mix that supports excellent drainage. Imagine wearing a raincoat in a downpour; just as the coat keeps you dry, the right soil mix shields your cacti from excess moisture.

Understanding the Basics

Although succulent and cactus soil have small differences, both succulents and cacti like it when the soil has good aeration. Sticky and compact soil is terrible for succulents. The roots dont like it because it retains moisture for long periods, making it difficult for the plant to breathe.

Adjustments

PH Level

Ensures the soil maintains a slightly acidic to neutral pH level, which is optimal for succulent cactus plants, allowing for better nutrient uptake and overall plant health.

Tailoring the soil mix to your specific environment is like customizing a suit. In more humid climates, increase the sand and perlite/pumice ratio. In drier areas, add a bit more organic matter.
